Even though Christmas markets are typically a German tradition, nowadays they are organized throughout Europe. Also in Italy you can find quite a few Christmas markets that are worth visiting, especially in the Northern part of the country. So if you have planned a trip to Italy in late November or December, then a day trip to a Christmas market is something you should not miss. We have made a list of several beautiful Christmas markets which are all only a 2 hour drive away from Casa Clara!
Verona (50 minutes)
Verona really doesn’t need an excuse for a visit but in the winter it does get quite magical thanks to the Christmas market. From November 16th until December 26th 2018 you can admire the artisan products of over 80 exhibitors that showcase the merchandise in the traditional wooden booths. Verona works together with the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt in Germany to organize this Christmas market so an authentic Christmas market vibe is guaranteed!
Grazzano Visconti (1 hour and 19 minutes)
Grazzano Visconti is a medieval stronghold in the province of Piacenza that has a magnificent castle and beautiful gardens as its main attraction. A perfect location for a magical Christmas market! This year will be the fifth time they organize it so don’t expect it to be the size of the Christmas market in Trento or Verona. The charm of the Christmas market in Grazzano Visconti is the beautiful setting and atmosphere. You can visit on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 17th of November 2018 and the 6th of January 2019.
Trento (1 hour and 30 minutes)
With over 90 exhibitors the Christmas market in Trento is the biggest on our list which received over 500.000 visitors each year. The market is held on two distinct locations in the city centre; Piazza Fiera and Piazza Battista. Here you will find a vast offer of traditional Christmas decorations, local culinary delights and handmade products. The theme “eco” is very important to the city and you can notice this from the eco friendly and recycled shopping bags that are used and the fact only green energy is used for all the lighting for the Christmas markets. You can visit the Christmas market in Trento from 24th of November 2018 until the 6th of January 2019.
Levico Terme (1 hour and 50 minutes)
An unique aspect of the Christmas market in Levico Terme is that it is held in a big natural park; “Il Parco Secolare degli Asburgo”. You will find about 60 exhibitors that showcase their merchandise in traditional wooden booths. If you add a thick layer of snow then you get a beautiful almost fairytale like scenery. For the young children there is also the village of elves to be discovered. The Christmas market in Levico Terme is open from November 24th 2018 until January 6th 2019.
Bolzano (2 hours)
The Christmas market in Bolzano is situated around Piazza Walther and is comparable to the one in Verona in size. Also in Bolzano you can admire about 80 booths, of which at least a third consists of artisan products. The South Tyrolean influence is very noticeable in the style of the Christmas markets and of course in the products offered. You will be able to try some famous local dishes like “Canederli” and “Schlutzkrapfen”. Don’t forget to try also the “Apfelstrudel”, a delicious dessert made of apples. You can visit the Christmas market in Bolzano from the 22nd of November 2018 until the 6th of January 2019.
Merano (2 hours and 15 minutes)
The Christmas market in Merano should not have made this list because it is a bit further away: you will have to travel for about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Casa Clara to get there. But without it, the list would not feel complete. And it’s worth the drive, we promise! Merano is a beautiful city full of charm and there is nothing more enjoyable than strolling the streets of the city centre during Christmas time. The Christmas market itself is quite big, it has about 70 booths and there are a lot of things to do. There is an ice rink for ice skating and you can participate in creative workshops. The Christmas market is opened from November 23rd 2018 until January 6th 2019.
